Caught Driving Without Insurance?
If you or someone you know has been caught driving without insurance, you may wonder how long that incident will stay on your abstract. Once it does come off… what then?
Canadian drivers are required by law to carry auto insurance, and getting caught without it is a serious offence. In Ontario, for example, the fine for a first offence starts at $5,000. As steep as it is, there some consolation in the fact that the fine won’t follow you forever.
Being convicted of driving without insurance will stay on your driving record for three years from the date of conviction. Once your three years are up, if an insurance company in Canada pulls your driving record, they will not see the conviction listed.
The situation is a bit more complicated if your licence also suspended.
If your licence was suspended at the same time as the no insurance conviction, then this also on your record and only clears off of it three years after your driver’s licence was reinstated.
Whether you have a ticket on your record for something as serious as driving without insurance or for failing to wear your seatbelt, you should touch base with your insurance broker each year before you renew to review your situation and ensure you’re getting the best coverage to fit your needs.
